I don’t know about you guys, but I love washi tape. I love the colors and patterns it comes in. It seems the choices of washi are endless. Can you have too much washi? I don’t think so.
I use a grid composition book as my planner/journal/diary. While I decorate the outside, the pages are very plain. I’m quite a minimalist when it comes to my planner layouts but I do like to add a little color. Enter washi tape.
My favorite way to use washi tape to organize my book, is to put it on the outside edges of the pages. I do this in a couple of different ways. I make sections in the back of my book for different projects, lists, etc. I estimate how many pages I want in each section. Each section will get a different washi tape.
So when I look at the edges of my pages, even when the book is closed, the sections are clearly delineated from each other. (I apologize for the quality of the photo. It's very difficult to hold my journal and snap a photo. But you get the idea.)
You could use this approach to differentiate each month’s layout from the next month. And as you do this over time the edges of your pages are so colorful and pretty.
Another idea is to use washi tape to organize your family's activities and yours. Each member of the family gets a different color tape in your planner. Then when someone has an activity or appointment you put a piece of their color washi tape on the day. And the beauty of washi tape is you can write on it. So you can write the time and name of the activity. Color coding has never been so easy.
And if you have repeat appointments or activities for yourself you can use a different style of tape for each of your activities. Say you love going to the yoga studio but don’t have a set schedule. Just add a piece of tape to your planner that is strictly for yoga. Put it on the day you are going to the studio and add the time.
You can use one style of washi for your work appointments. Then you can just write the time and place on that piece of tape on the day of the appointment. This works for bills to pay as well. Just add another color of washi tape to the day you want to pay a bill. You can write the name and amount on the tape so it is right at your fingertips. No forgetting to pay someone.
Since there are so many things you can keep track of this way, it might be helpful to create a legend at the very front of your planner until you have all the colors memorized.
Another use of washi tape is to show blocks of time on your daily schedule. If a meeting is scheduled for 2 hours, say from 8 — 10, just put a piece of tape in your planner from 8 — 10 and write the meeting details on the tape. Once again you can get really creative here and use different colors or styles for different types of meetings. Or if you want to schedule a block of uninterrupted time to work on a project, washi tape to the rescue.
I try to have a highlight on my weekly layout of a goal, quote or something funny. I use washi tape to color in the area where I am going to put my goal. Then my eye naturally wonders to that spot anytime I look at my weekly layout.
Even if you are a minimalist journaler like me (just the facts, ma'am) adding a little color with washi tape is easy and fun.
